Throne of Glass Series TV Show Reactions | What to expect?

AND ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST!

The infamous Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is known to many many many readers worldwide. It's one of the most popular series to date and has taken the world by storm... literally. However, it has come to my attention that this wonderful series has fallen under a long list of other books that have been turned into TV shows and movies. On that list are other popular books and series such as The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, Divergent by Veronica Roth and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

I don't know what I'm more upset about, the fact that this wonderful series is being turned into a show or that it's only going to be on Hulu. Hulu?? Who uses Hulu? I'm not going to go out of my way to buy a Hulu account to watch one TV show.

Although one could argue that this series is finally getting the air time it deserves, I can't overlook the fact that most book to movie adaptations (not all) have destroyed books in the past. But if there's one thing I'm glad about, it's their decision to turn it into a TV show instead of a movie. Oh boy, what a disaster that would have been.

I can't deny that this is an incredible feat for Miss Sarah J Maas. It has proved how much work she's put into her writing and the production company saw great potential in a series that is backed by so many loyal fans. Well done! Before going into this post, please acknowledge that I am in no way hating on the author of the book series. This post is simply regarding the fact that my favorite book series is going to be turned into a TV show.

This GIF is literally most of the Throne of Glass fandom...

It's hard to tell this early on whether Hulu will do Sarah J Maas' series justice. My main concern with the adaptation, in line with my concerns about the TMI TV show adaptation, is that they're taking quite a large series and condensing it. During the Shadowhunters season premiere, the entire fandom was shitting about how much they changed from the books. Of course, I know that the directors can't take exactly what's inside the book and translate it on the screen. Changes are necessary. We get that. I watched the first season of Shadowhunters and it was subpar, to say the least. Most of the show's focal point was its delicious cast of characters, rather than the plot and Clary's self-discovery. It would be an understatement to say that I didn't like it.

And maybe I'm comparing the TMI TV show adaptation to how their going to make the Throne of Glass one, but I can't help but have this irrational fear that they're going to destroy one of my favorite series of all time. Now, we haven't seen the casting yet but if there's one thing this announcement can do to redeem itself it would be through the casting. The cast will make or break the show. We've already seen how bad casting can go through Shadowhunters. They've got the two leading characters all wrong! Clary, or Katherine McNamara, is a real kicker but she adds no depth to the Clary Fray the fandom knows so well. We barely see any of the emotional baggage she's supposed to carry after she realizes her mom is in danger and she's a part of an ancient race that keeps demons from wreaking havoc on the human world. Jace, played by Dominic Sherwood, although very very very good looking, doesn't do the brooding and mysterious Shadowhunter justice at all. Did the directors and producers think they could just put teenagers in leather and skinny jeans and they'd magically become Shadowhunters?

The truth is... I'M TERRIFIED. I honestly think I have a right to be since Hollywood doesn't have a particularly great track record when it comes to adaptations. The TV show in the making has been titled 'Queen of Shadows'. All we know so far is that is has been picked up by the Mark Gordon Company, one I'm not familiar with. Kira Snyder, who is set to write the adaptation, gives me all the hope in the world to be happy about the show. Kira was the writer of 'The 100', one of my all-time favorite shows. I have no doubt that she'll do good on yet another action-packed series.

Things 'Queen of Shadows' Must Get Right To Appease the Fandom

  1. Casting - The casting of Celaena, Chaol and Dorian must be done right, down to the last detail. They must find that golden actress that can handle Celaena's snark without trying too hard or Chaol's indifference to Celaena without being too forced. They must find the actor with soft features and the kind face of Dorian, but still regal-looking.
  2. Portray Celaena's inner struggles - The assassin part of Celaena doesn't make up her entire character. That's one part of her life she can't change or fight. I don't want this show to turn into some YA love fest where the producers only care about getting the two characters together. I really want to see Celaena carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. From the death of Sam Cortland, the shit Arobynn put her through and to the year she spent in Endovier, I want to see the scarred and beat up person that Celaena is. I definitely think this is the most challenging part for the creators because the only way I can think of them sufficiently putting in Celaena's past is with the use of flashbacks. I have sort of a love hate relationship with flashbacks, especially in TV shows.
  3. World building - The immense world-building and creation of Erilea is 70% of what makes up the Throne of Glass series. I imagine vast open spaces with mountains, deserts, and jungles. They can't leave out the hint of magic that is in the atmosphere of the world. I expect most of their budget to be well-spent on world-building and sets.
  4. Wicked action scenes- The fandom loves how Maas never shows her characters mercy. The fight scenes are pretty brutal and the characters barely make it out alive in the book.
  5. And please please please don't change the plot on us!
So I may not be this show's number one supporter, but I can't not be excited about my favorite series coming to life. At this point, I can only presume from what I know about adaptations in the past. I'm ready to see Celaena and Chaol spar, Fleetfoot, Manon and ALL THE FREAKING FANCY-ASS DRESSES CELAENA IS GOING TO HAVE.

I wanna know, what are your thoughts?

  1. I believe that you are right. Your reasons and fears are logical and based in previous disappointments. But there is one show that got it almost exactly like the book series. The Outlander as a tv show has almost copy-paste the books and the setting and the heroes are amazing. If they were to follow the example of the Outlander tv show then I hope that we will get a great show. If you have the write of the 100 in the team, then I think we have covered the emotional aspect. I like the 100 series very much! Great post!

    1. Ahh I've watched a few episodes of that to take a break and read the book! I'm really glad that you said that because it means I'll like the book as much as I liked the show! If that's so, I'm sure this show will be everything I've been hoping for. YES the 100 is spot on in terms of action, romance and emotion.

  2. Mm, I think you captured my hesitance and excitement all in one post! Because whilst there is the potential for greatness, there are so many examples when adaptions have turned out to be a flop, and that terrifies me. Here's hoping that it will be a successful adaption! :)

    1. For sure! I have high expectations but I didn't lose my faith in the producers. I truly think they're going to try their best to appease the fandom and are not going to half-ass it.

  3. I'm so excited for the show! I'm really hoping it won't be another letdown though. Like the recent Shadowhunters show that I could not watch it was so cheesy. I hope Hulu will do a good job with it. I have faith in them since Stephen King's 11/22/63 was done SO WELL. :D

    1. Ohh I didn't know they did Stephen King's 11/22/63! That sounds so amazing right now, and I really want to watch it! I'm excited but I do have my hesitations.

  4. I am really torn about this too. After seeing what they did to the Shadowhunters, I am not sure that I trust producers to do the series justice. Throne of Glass is one of my favorite series because of the depth of the characters and their development. But those things are extremely hard to pull of on screen. Like you said, I am worried that the series will be oversimplified to a romance without any of the action and plot that I loved in the books.
While I will keep track of reviews and reactions, I might just skip the TV series so that Aelin, Chaol, and Dorian can remain pure in my mind. Plus it is only on Hulu and I am 100% a Netflix girl.

    1. Netflix girls, high five! Yeah I really don't want them to ruin the series for me. They should really wait until the series is complete to start screwing with the actual plotlines into a TV show. I'd be more satisfied if they waited until the last book came out.

    2. Yeah, that is actually a great point. I would hate for the series to end up like Game of Thrones, where you are always waiting for the next season and the next book at the same time. My poor fangirl heart would never be able to handle it. I love how Maas has been writing the series so far and I don't want a TV series to sway her writing or anything.

  5. I haven't read the Throne of Glass series, but I do know what you're feeling. I felt the same way when I saw the movie adaptation for Vampire Academy, one of my favorite series. I was so disappointed and have been weary of movie/tv adaptions ever since. I'm crossing my fingers that all goes well!

    1. Ohh that movie crashed and burned! I'm actually not a harsh reviewer when it comes to movies/tv shows but that one was just too cheesy for me! I'm crossing my toes and fingers :D

  6. I've only read the first book and half of Crown of Midnight but I get the fear (because at least I LOVED TOG). It'll take a miracle for everything to turn out well, from casting to world-building on screen. But I'll keep my fingers crossed!!! However, I AM mad that it'll be on HULU. HULU IS NOT AVAILABLE IN MEXICO. GAAAAAAH.

    1. That's going to be one hell of a budget. I really feel bad for the producers because they have the fans (including me) breathing down their backs. I can't help it though! I want my favorite series to stay intact and the way it is.

  7. I mean, I really do love SJM's work, and I think an adaptation would do wonders, so long as it's done right. But book-to-movie adaptations have such a shaky record of actually being successful that it makes me hesitant to jump on board, and to support it fully. I really don't want to get my hope up high, only to have it come crashing down. The book community has already had too many experiences like that!

    1. I agree with everything you've said Erika! It's great but at the same time it's so scary. I'm super conflicted about this decision and just hope Sarah J Maas is happy this is happening. That's all that matters right now - that she's worked so hard to get where she is and she should be proud!

  8. At first, I was excited that ToG was going to be a television series instead of a movie series. It seemed like the right way to make sure most of the good stuff wasn't left out on the cutting room floor. BUT, when they announced it would air on Hulu it got me worried. I can't stand the thought of them wrecking our beloved ToG series so I'll definitely wait to see what people think before I even CONSIDER subscribing to Hulu XD

    1. I also might end up subscribing because I really want to see how it turns out! I just can't imagine how I'll feel if they don't do it right though...

  9. I swear to god .. if Sarah J Maas's epic fantasy series is ruined because the people behind the show want to put their own take on the story or give the fans a surprise.. I WILL BE SO ANGRY AND HURT.
