Books That I Just Didn't Like

I keep writing posts and reviews about the books I loved reading or had a spiritual connection with. But wait... what about those few books that I don't end up enjoying or those that just didn't make the cut to get its own review. If you're looking for some books to read, heed my warning and stay away from these (in my opinion of course!).

**Disclaimer: This post is not to rant on these authors or these books. Everyone has their own opinions and this is not the intention of the post. My intention is to spill my deepest thoughts about some books that I haven't enjoyed in the years to inform.**

Half Bad by Sally Green

I'm very critical when it comes to books about the supernatural because there are just so many books that the rules of these beings vary widely from book to book. That's why it's important to find a supernatural book with a kind of unique element that makes it stand out from the rest. Write this down, I'm giving you some tips LOL. In this book's case, we have witches. The concept of the story is brilliant; I had no qualms with that, but then, of course, there is the problem with the narrative arc and the plotline. Yeah, there was none or at least that's what I thought. I know a lot of people who totally respect this book for its awesomeness but it just didn't sit well with me and every time I see it on my bookshelf, I cringe.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

I 100% picked this one up because it was about a girl who relived moments before her death. The element of reliving things just adds something very unique to any book because 1) It's hard to write about and 2) It has to be done with perfection. As you can tell, I didn't like this book but not because their whole "reliving-everything-before-it-happened" scheme wasn't good. It was because the characters annoyed me to the point of no return. I was literally bawling my eyes out at how irritating and ignorant the main character was and, not to mention, she does some unmentionable stuff!

Incarnate by Jodi Meadows

What makes this even sadder (is that a word) is that the covers for this trilogy are mind-blowing and beautiful. *clap clap* To the cover artist. I picked up all three books in one shot after going to a convention and saying, "Ohh hey I don't have all these books. I must have them!" But at that time my collection of books was just beginning so of course I jumped at any chance to buy books that looked nice. Boy, was I sorely mistaken! Incarnate is not bad; it's just not good. And I frequently yell at 13-year-old me for picking the entire series up without reading the first book. Incarnate also kind of follows that whole reliving and reincarnation aspect. The book fell flat with it's explanations and world-building. I wasn't extremely bored with the book but I wasn't lighting up with each chapter and anticipating the next. To any reader, that's a huge problem because you should be interested and excited for the book! So yeah it wasn't a total loss because I have these beautiful covers but then again, I will never read them. GARAGE SALE TIME hehe xD!

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

HAHA THIS IS FAKE!! Are you kidding I love all of Jennifer's books. Hope you're reading! Pst... this is here to trick you. yes I'm devilish like that. You can't deny the blogosphere's ubiquitous love for JLA!

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

I have a whole other book talk on this so you can check that out here! But to be short and simple, this book did not dress to impress. Ha, you see what I did there? (beacuse the cover is like, once again, so beauuuuitfffuulllll). The pacing was surprisingly slow, and I did not see that coming since this was supposed to be a fantastical, magical realism book. The characters we annoying, ugh. I don't like characters that pity themselves when there is someone out there that could be having it 1000x worse.

I haven't read many bad books at all and it was really hard to come up with these titles because I respect the authors but maybe I just didn't enjoy their books. And sorry Jennifer for putting you through that haha xD. I had to share my love for Jennifer L. Armentrout books.

So what are some titles that you just didn't enjoy? Care to share?

    1. I really hope you do like it more than I did. Every reader should have a better experience than I did, and we all have our different opinions.

  3. I've been wanting to read Magonia and Half Bad though I've heard good and bad things about both. Maybe I'll get to them eventually. They aren't high on my reading list. One book that I really didn't like is Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevive Tucholke - I just couldn't with the lack of logic and common sense in the main character. I did finish it though but now it's in the pile of books I'm planning on giving away. This is the same reason why I can't bring myself to finish reading the Mortal Instruments.

  4. I don't remember much liking Incarnate either. I went into it thinking that it was more of a science fiction/dystopia for some reason, so I was a bit let down. I've heard mixed things about Half Bad, though I haven't read it yet. I do have a copy of it on my shelf though so I will probably still check it out.

  5. I agree with you on Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I actually hate it simply because the story is repetitive and the MC is just annoying and ignorant. I hate how she didn't realize everything she and her friends did was wrong. smh.
The book I didn't like was We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. I have high expectations towards the book but I wasn't surprise with its twist. Totally predictable and the characters are annoying and spoiled brats. Wonderful post Alex! :)

    1. I totally agree with you on Before I Fall. I thought I was the only one that felt that way. We Were Liars is on my TBR but thank you so much for sharing, I kind of haven't been wanting to read it ever since I last got it! LOL Spoiled brats. I haven't read the book yet but I kind of understand where you are coming from.

  6. I can definitely agree with you on Before I Fall. I started to read it right after Delirium (which I absolutely adore!) and I went in thinking that it would be just as amazing. I was really wrong. The characters were all so stereotypically annoying and the WHINING! I made it like thirty pages before I decided that I actually wanted to keep my sanity, so I had to put the book down.
I have read so many reviews about Sally Green's books. The reviews have all been half bad, half good (see what I did there?!?). Some people loved it, and others, like yourself, did not see it as whole good.

    1. Delirium was good, huh? I don't know ever since I read Before I Fall, I was so scared to try any other of Lauren's books. I must try it now just to be sure of myself but I totally trust you.

AHH I see what you did there. Tessa you're undoubtedly the person I will go to next in case I'm in need of a joke of just a good book pun haha!

  7. Eh, I don't think I'll even want to read these books because I also have a tendency to DNF books with dumb and annoying characters. Though, I'm still interested in reading Magonia. I've never read a Jennifer L. Armentrout book before (I have no idea whyyyy) so maybe I should try with Obsidian first. Great post, Alex! :D

  8. Everyone has some books they just didn't like! I am sorry to say though, that most of the books I don't like usually end up being the ones that next to EVERYONE and their mothers like... like Harry Potter. I just couldn't get into it >> And I have read the first three books, not sure whether or not to go on.

I was actually happy when I saw Obsidian because I was like FINALLY someone agrees with me because I didn't hate it - but didn't really like it too much either. But then you actually do like it lol xD

    1. It's okay gurl don't feel bad. *whispers* I didn't like Harry Potter much either. I was doing a readathon for it but then I didn't feel the first book capturing me so I just stopped and read everything else that was on my TBR. Ohh sorry for the mixup on Obsidian. I love her books and I kind of wanted to exemplify that!
