COVER TALK: Roseblood by AG Howard

Title: Roseblood
Author: A.G. Howard
Pages: 400 pages
Published: January 10th, 2017
Genre: YA, Retelling
In this modern day spinoff of Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide.

Hoping creative direction will help, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have ties to The Phantom of the Opera. At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn -- an elusive violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own masks.

As the two discover an otherworldly connection, a soul-deep romance blossoms. But when Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light, he’s forced to make a deadly choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known. Slated to launch January 2017.

A.G. HOWARD is known for her Splintered series, which is supposed to be this fantasy retelling of Alice In Wonderland. However, I've heard from many of my friends that he makes the world and characters a lot darker than Lewis Carroll's original story. Lyrical writing, romance and an eerie story ensue.

Personally I wasn't a huge fan of this series. By that I mean, it didn't grab me at the start when I read the synopsis. I was obsessed with the covers for a long time but never found it to be a great enough incentive for me to start what was probably going to be another series. Tons of authors have borrowed the Alice In Wonderland concept, and I believe I was justified in thinking that it would be the same as any other AIW retelling I'd ever read.

A.G. HOWARD, YOU HAVE COMPLETELY OUTDONE YOURSELF THIS TIME! A Phantom of the Opera retelling?? Are you kidding me? This is the greatest thing to have been announced since the reveal of the 8th Harry Potter book. No joke guys! The longest running show on Broadway is getting its own book. My feelings are more jumping from excitement than anxious about how this is going to turn out. I was the kind of kid who had parents that were obsessed with this Broadway show, so it would only be fair to inform any of you Phantom-lovers!

I especially love how the girl is wearing the mask in the cover. It looks a lot more feminine with the roses and the hair billowing in the background. I've got to give it to this cover. I also appreciate that she used the same cover artists as the Splintered series, although it was kind of confusing at first. I originally though this book was the fourth Splintered series book; it's not. This cover is just hitting me so hard in the feels right now.

What do you think of the cover? Will you be buying this book when it comes out?

  1. I love when authors have matching covers across all of their books - even if they aren't part of the series. Susane Colasanti (or however you spell her name) does that with her spines; they all match, even though they're all standalone romances. I'm super excited for a Phantom of the Opera retelling too. I haven't read her Splintered series yet, but the mixed reviews are kind of dissuading me.

    1. I'm the same with the mixed reviews. I don't think I'll ever pick up that series but the premise of this new one is enough to make me want to pick it up. I just hope it meets my expectations. It's great to see authors taking on that challenge of turning Broadway shows into books.

    1. Yep. It definitely got me at first. I guess what I'm really wondering is if these covers are photos are real people and just photoshopped. They look kind of fake but at the same time, like real people posing.

  7. I loved her Splintered series, apart from book three which, not so much. But I had no idea she was releasing anything new. I tend not to be up to date with new releases usually. It sounds magnificent! I love the cover, not a fan of the typography though sadly but can't wait until it's released. Thanks for sharing Alex, have just added it to my Goodreads <3

  10. I do love the cover alot! Though I am wondering if ALL of her books will have similar covers, because that seems to be the theme for her, it seems.
