Ethan, aka "Scam," has a way with words.

When he opens his mouth, whatever he wants you to hear comes out. But Ethan isn't just a smooth talker. He has a unique ability to say things he doesn't consciously even know. Sometimes the voice helps, but sometimes it hurts- like now, when the voice has lied and has landed Ethan in a massive mess. So now Ethan needs help. And he needs to go to the last people who would ever want to help him- his former group of friends, the self-named "zeros" who also all possess similarly double-edged abilities, and who are all angry at Ethan for their own respective reasons. Brought back together by Scam's latest mischief, they find themselves entangled in an epic, whirlwind adventure packed with as much interpersonal drama as mind-bending action.

** I received an ARC copy of this book from Simon Pulse. This has not affected my review in any way**

Let's just take a breather for this cover.... *inhale exhale*
I did not have a good experience with the Uglies series by Westerfeld but did it stop me from screaming and fangirling when this book appeared at my doorstep? No! I'm a sucker for anything with superpowers, and I was hoping that by picking up this book, I was going to get a totally new perspective on powers. I was not disappointed.

A beautiful mix of X-men (if the x-men were hormonal teenagers) and Teen Titans fan-based!

This book is going to be the latest talk in the superhero world! For all you superhero addicts out there, get ready for the new branded X-men! New heroes introduced into YA literature with unique powers. There's Nate with the power of crowd control. Chizara with the ability to crash and destroy electronics with a single thought. Thibault with a power to make you forget him. Ethan, who has a 'voice' that sometimes does the talking and seems to know everything, even in dangerous situations. Riley who can see through the the eyes of others but not through her own. And finally Kelsie, who can also sway the crowd's emotion with a single though and lots of concentration. This band of misfits find no connection with each other besides the fact that they were all born in the year 2000 and have this weird power that can make or break a situation.

What's to love?

  • Superheroes, drug dealers, and the cops? Oh please, this has my name written all over it. Our group of heroes likes to get themselves in a whole lot of trouble with drug dealers and an occasional encounter with the police. It's not everyday we see our friendly neighborhood Spiderman causing some trouble.
  • This displays friendship and teamwork in the most beautiful way. How 5 so-called heroes with super powers come together after an incident causes them to split up. Their bond proves to be stronger than some age-old argument that tore them apart. And, of course, with the new Zero  lurking around, it poses a whole new problem.
  • The plot can't be described. After reading this book I've come to a conclusion that there is no way I could give you a good synopsis of this book other than what the summary has to say. The story leads you on a different path with every new chapter that it's difficult to come up with a concise storyboard and layout for you.
  • A collaboration between three fantastic authors. I always love collaborations because they harbor the work and imaginations of so many different minds. The sky is the limit and I think that's technically the case with this book since there were so many different things going on and it never left a dry scene.
  • THE CUTEST ROMANCE EVER. The thing about having romance between superheroes is that you have to make sure their powers don't conflict with one another's and that they compliment each other nicely. You can't have one person controlling fire and one controlling ice, it just doesn't make much sense. The romances and partnerships in this book are planned so beautifully and it's like the couples make a perfect fit as their powers seem to be melded into one by the end of the book. You'll notice how lyrical and seamless the authors make the relationships sound and it's so cute and amazing how they structured it!
  • A super villain? More like a squad of goon villains! I can't say more without spoiling but let me just say the antagonists in this book are more interesting than you'd expect them to be...
  • Strong female characters. In any book I look for strong heroines because that's what makes YA literature so fun to read! GO FEMINISTS! I love how all the girls in this book stand for what they believe in and don't take shit from anyone, not even their boyfriends! If they say they can protect themselves, you should damn well listen to them!
  • This book takes superheroes to the next level! If you want something to fulfill your X-men hunger, this book is the perfect balance to mutants and learning how to use their powers.
  • Although this book is pretty large in length, time passes by so fast and in a matter of hours, you're already halfway through with the book! It's very fast-paced with the action and characters you'll be rooting for along the way!
  • CLIFFHANGER ALERT! Omg this book leaves us questioning what happens to all these heroes next. I'm literally dying here for the next book when the first one hasn't even come out yet!!
What did I not like about this book? Nothing! There were some minor things I would have changed but I'm not revealing them for spoiler reasons. This book captured the 4.5 star rating, just not entirely the 5 star yet. But I'm hoping that'll all change with the next book in the series. Looking for something in the realm of the DC comics? Yearning for a taste of some sweet powers?

Will you be buying Zeroes when it comes out?

  1. I have my eye on this, because I was one of the people that found Uglies enjoyable. Not amazing but enjoyable. Light. I just didn't realize it was so long. I tend to stray from lengthier books because they're long and I worry about it keeping my attention. But, it does sound pretty amazing. I'll keep thinking about it :)

    1. I hope you end up reading it. It's a collaboration so I guess the other author's writing style shone more in this one. Is shone a word lmfao??

  2. This is on my TBR lists, though I don't know when I'll be able to get to it. Very detailed review...there are a few points in it that weren't mentioned in the ones I've read before. Lucky you for the ARC!
