Spice Up Your Life This Christmas | Decorating Tips & Tricks

Thanksgiving is officially over and that means we're switching gears into Christmas! I've got some adorable Christmas tips to decorate and transform your space into the ultimate holiday hangout. These are just pictures from my room but I do also have some pictures from online.

1. Tassel Garlands

The things hanging on my bookshelf are changing with the seasons. In the wintertime, I like to put up Christmas lights but now I've decided to do something different. You could easily spice up your shelves by purchasing some of these tassel garlands. But you could also make them yourself, which I have before. These are a great way to make the holidays even more decorative if you don't want to commit to those Christmas lights that get tangled all the time. The colors are also very customizable for the different seasons and holidays.

To create the tassels for the hanging garland, unfold tissue paper. Begin rolling tightly down the middle crease. Continue rolling, fold in half and then twist to create a loop for hanging.

2. Stand-up Lights

Cute, huh? Don't mind the succulents. We're looking at the big Christmas tree light in the middle. I got this one from Home Goods for a very cheap price of like $14.99. I think that these small ornaments around the house really make the holiday season bright! I love having them light up at night when I go to bed. What's great about this one is that is also has a four hour timer so when you turn it on, it turns off automatically in four hours and turns back on in the next 20 hours. In order to reset the cycle of four hours, you would do it manually from the back.

3. Throw Blankets and Pillows

Throw blankets and pillows are a must for the holiday season. They are warm, cozy, and stay true to the festive colors of the season. You can basically find them anywhere! I got this red, black, and white one from American Eagle when they were doing a buy something and get a blanket for free. I think it's limited edition so sorry I can't tell you where exactly to find it. I'll leave links to some good DIYs and Pinterest photos of throw pillows.

I really want to do this with song lyrics.:

4. Holiday Canvases

Cheery Wall Art - simple canvases painted and adorned with ribbon. Easy to coordinate with any season or holiday.:
Christmas canvases are so easy to DIY. Just buy a plain canvas, some brushes, paint, and get creative with it! There are really endless possibilities and canvases are fairly inexpensive when bought in bulk.

My favorite DIY canvas is simply taking a brush and going down the canvas with several different colors. It's easy, simple, and very shabby-chic looking.

Next tip: Flash tattoos on canvases. This has been my holy grail lately when it comes to easy canvas ideas. Flash tattoos are easily found everywhere and can go for as cheap as $5-10 dollars. It's easy! Just stick on the tattoo as if you were going to put it on your skin and then stick it on the canvas. No joke, this really works and it works well because once the tattoos dry, you'll have yourself a beautiful metallic outline.

5. Mini Christmas Trees

Still want a vibrant and colorful tree to remind you of nature? A fake tree is an awesome way to get really festive with the holidays without going through the hassle of watering and maintaining a real tree. Small trees are also perfect for table side decorations and for garnishing your shelves with some Christmas spirit!

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon | A Book Like No Other

Author: Samantha Shannon
Pages: 480 pages
Published: May 6th, 2014
Source: Scratch and Dent from Bookoutlet.com
Genre: Fantasy, Magical Realism
Rating:
The year is 2059. Nineteen-year-old Paige Mahoney is working in the criminal underworld of Scion London, based at Seven Dials, employed by a man named Jaxon Hall. Her job: to scout for information by breaking into people's minds. For Paige is a dreamwalker, a clairvoyant and, in the world of Scion, she commits treason simply by breathing.

It is raining the day her life changes for ever. Attacked, drugged and kidnapped, Paige is transported to Oxford - a city kept secret for two hundred years, controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. Paige is assigned to Warden, a Rephaite with mysterious motives. He is her master. Her trainer. Her natural enemy. But if Paige wants to regain her freedom she must allow herself to be nurtured in this prison where she is meant to die.

The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine and also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut.

Get it now!
The Bone Season discovers a world with people and their own system of government that has never been explored before in YA, well at least not to my knowledge. The whole concept of this book is very illustrative and original and it mostly appalls me that someone could come up with a brand new idea with such complexity and bring about it so well.

If you didn't understand the short synopsis (like me), then I'd be happy to restate it in a few words. Clairvoyants or people that are somehow connected with the aether and have these otherworldly powers, are mostly looked down upon in society as freaks of nature and devils because they are stronger and more dangerous than the average human being. There are mime lords in this society who, I guess you could say, are the good guys and offer these clairvoyants refuge and a job that pays well to live off on. Our main character Paige is a clairvoyant and among the most powerful types- she's a cipher. She's been hired under Jaxon Hall to recruit other people with abilities and do his bidding. That all changes when, on a mission, she gets captured by this part of society that enslaves the clairvoyants and uses their powers for their advantages. From then on, Paige's whole life changes and she realizes that there's more to the world she doesn't know much about.

I want to mention how beautiful and eloquent the writing is. It's very light on the wording and there aren't any info dumps, which is usually expected in a novel of this length and complexity. The story flows easily from page to page and there is sort of an ethereal feeling when read inside your head. I just think the whole idea of the aether and the connection between the corporeal world and the world beyond is so interesting and something I'd like to read more of. The book turns from present to past as we see flashbacks from the main character's life that teach us more about the present.

Samantha Shannon's characters are golden! They have a slight tang of sarcastic and that snarky attitude which puts them up on my list of favorite characters of all time. They are all very unique and you can tell instantly when a character is speaking.

Now before I read the book, I'd been hearing so much about it already. Some people are hesitant because the synopsis makes no sense or the book seems very intimidating in size. Those 480 pages are totally worth it as this book transports you into a world that may very well be what our future looks like if people start developing clairvoyant powers. It's an easy read that allows you to fly past the pages of an action-packed fantasy read and will definitely have you questioning the book at every chapter.

The only qualm I really had was that I wished the author would have taken more time to explain the world and the backstory in the beginning. Like, say, hold our hand through the history books and learn more about how the characters got where they were. Other than that, this book has earned it's place among the top three books I've loved this year. Congrats!

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline + 1980's TRIVIA GAME!

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within the world's digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win- and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

Get it now!

I'm going to start with a short and sweet review and then we'll get into the good and juicy part of this entire post!

I'm finally ready to admit that I haven't read one of the most popular books in today's society. One that is known for it's renown use of 1980's decade pop culture media references and the infamous "gamer's language". To make matters worse, I've had a hard copy since last summer and I didn't have an incentive to pick it up. How stupid, I was. Ready Player One is a go-put-the-book-your-reading-now-down-and-read-this-one kind of book. It's everything of a fast-paced fiction thriller story will tickle the tummy of your inner geekiness. And if that wasn't enough, well just imagine this book as the blueprint for what society will become in a mere 50-60 years.

It's as if Ernest Cline time traveled to this destroyed, futuristic society and is chronicling his day to day events. Reading the book till the very end in one shot is unavoidable because the writing is very addictive and the chapters leave off at cliffhangers that you're basically dying to see what unfolds in the next one. The characters are like teenagers today, immersed in the life of all these games that are being created. Cline is just too good at demonstrating to the reader that  yes, in fact, the real world is scarier than the world of a game.

I can't help but get excited for a possible future with the OASIS. Of course, it would be horrible if reality became the ugly place that it was in the book but the idea of technology going as far as a "virtual reality" makes me get really excited! Anyone else agree that they would play in the world of OASIS if such a thing were possible.

Not getting into much, I don't want to take up most of this post with a review. Basically this is a book that should be on any reader's radar. Goddamn, you don't have to know anything about the 1980's decade to be able to read this book. It appeals to all geeks and nerds, which we booklovers are haha. For a fast-paced reader who's looking for an engrossing background story that comes with the plot, this book is golden and one of my top favorites of this year!

And now to test your 1980's trivia skills..

Welcome back! If you're reading this section, it means you're audacious enough to try this 1980's trivia game based on the Ready Player One book. I didn't make it to be unsolvable or even that hard but if your childhood was composed of everything that was going on in the 1980's or you're a big fan of the book, well, let's put your skills to the test!

**SPOILERS ARE INTENDED TO BE IN THIS TRIVIA QUIZ. MAKE SURE YOU'VE READ THE BOOK OR YOU DON'T MIND**

Author Spotlight | The Very First Author Gena Showalter

Hey guys.. no book reviews up my sleeve. I am reading something at the moment but I've decided to hold off on the review because I'm also creating something to go along with that post that I hope will be a big hit. I'm mashing up the mundane author spotlight. This author isn't just any one among my list of favorites, no. She's my first! She's the very first author that sparked and ignited the burning flame to the reading and blogging community.

About Gena Showalter

Gena Showalter

Gena Showalter is the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of the spellbinding Lords of the Underworld and Angels of the Dark series, two young adult series-- Everlife and the White Rabbit Chronicles-- and the highly addictive Original Heartbreakers series. In addition to being a National Reader's Choice and two time RITA nominee, her romance novels have appeared in Cosmopolitan (Red Hot Read) and Seventeen magazine, she's appeared on Nightline and been mentioned in Orange is the New Black-- if you ask her about it, she'll talk for hours... hours! Her books have been translated in multiple languages.

Books that I've read from her...

14 books from her!! 14 BOOKS!!

I think that's the most I've read from one single author. I will now proceed to show my favorite out of the ones that I've read...

6344423
This book is perfection. Just go away and read it and then come back and fangirl with me like a crazy lunatic!

You will like Gena Showalter if...

  • You enjoy hot, steamy romances. I swear when you read her work you'll feel like you're in a sauna! It gets so intimate and beautiful. Her writing and romance almost has a lyrical rhythm to it which flows so magically into the story and kick-ass action scenes.
  • You're into YA but want a little more romance and intimacy than a normal YA romance can offer. Her romance and character relationships are really unique, and I can always tell that I'm reading Gena Showalter when I'm looking at a piece of her works.
  • Gena is the Queen of Supernatural. She can whip up a great story of vampires and zombies and make it the most engrossing and interesting story to date. Take her White Rabbit Chronicles series for example. It's loosely based off of Alice In Wonderland and it's honestly hard to tell the similarities. She drops little clues and hints that refer back to Lewis Carroll's fairytale, but that's pretty much it. Then the rest of the story follows a unique perspective of a girl named Ali trying to fight the whole of zombies. But wait.... they aren't just zombies. Gena even takes a whole new spin on zombies and takes us into a world of spirit zombies that can only be attacked in spirit form.
  • You like stories that promise a good fighting scene. Looking for action and death? Read one of her books!
I think it's safe to say that Gena Showalter is one of my favorite authors. I had such a great time meeting her at the 92Y in NY. She's so beautiful and fun to talk to!

Have you read anything from Gena Showalter?

Winter by Marissa Meyer -- Expectations vs. What Really Happened

Before I eagerly (and crazily) jump back into the world of the Lunar Chronicles, one of my favorite series of all time, I thought it'd be fun to do a sort of an expectations vs what really happened. I have so many expectations for this book that I'm hoping *crossing my fingers* will come true. Wouldn't it be fun if you guys just stayed along for the ride?
**Be warned: There are spoilers for this series in this post. DO NOT PROCEED IF YOU HAVEN'T READ WINTER YET**

Expectation #1

Thus far into the book series, Kai and Cinder are my number one ship. I will ship them until I can't ship no more, or until a huge storm comes around and destroys all my ships (LOL). But yeah this romance and relationship must never cease to exist because if it does, I will personally tell my mom to make me fish, and I'll eat it! You're probably wondering what's so bad about that but I actually don't eat fish. LIKE NEVER, and I swore that I would never eat fish because I just have a weird and strange love towards marine creatures. So please please Marissa Meyer, don't make me eat fish!

I just wish for all the OTPs (i.e. Kai and Cinder, Thorne and Cress, Scarlet and Wolf) to stay afloat. Please, please, please don't let any of the main characters die. That would really hurt me deep down in the heart.

What Really Happened...

OMG THE SWOON. THE MAD DOG FREAKING SWOON. WTH MARISA MEYER YOUR ROMANCE IS HELLA CUTE. I definitely felt like, by the end of the book, I needed to see more between Kai and Cinder. You guys are probably yelling at me inside, like I'm really really picky. But no, I like my romance steaming hot and ready on a platter. It felt like Cinder was separated from Kai for so so long and they weren't reunited till like the very end of the book. Well, I guess I have to give it to them for being very important characters that were vital to the main plot and mission to take down Levana.

Oh I forgot that this is totally spoiler-filled anyways and that means all you who are reading have already read Winter... right? And you're all familiar with the way Marissa Meyer likes to handle her romance? The language and love between the characters is so irresistible and adorable that it makes you wonder why all love can't be like that.

Expectation #2

Wolf better get his ass up and save Scarlet. I swear, he better chop of Levana's finger, just like she did to Scarlet. Gee, I got so pissed off in that part. I'm just like wtf how is she gonna go about in life without one of her fingers. In all honestly, I want to believe that Levana is going to die at the end of all the preparing and rebellion. I want to be prepared for her death and I want Wolf to be the one that puts her down in the end. I mean out of all of them, he most likely has the strongest incentive. He kidnapped him from his home, got his mother killed, turned him into a mindless soldier, chopped off Scarlet's finger, and let's not forget to mention that she's the reason his life and his friend's lives are put into danger all because she won't give up her damn crown. She's the one to blame for his life being so dark and horrible, at times. I expect Wolf to kill Levana.

What Really Happened...

So remember that part where Wolf was being turned back into a special operatives soldier again? HOLY CRAP. I got so scared. Inside my head I was screaming, let him go you blasted idiots. He's stronger than you and he's going to rip your hearts out. He will never bow down to the queen. NEVER! This book just never seems to disappoint.

Expectation #3

I really want to see Cress and Thorne get it on! Like their romance so far has been so disappointing. I mean, they share that kiss in book three but where is the swooning love and romance that we're seeing between Kai and Cinder and Scarlet and Wolf. I think maybe Cress is a little shy because she's never actually been in a relationship but Thorne should really be there for her if he likes her. Who else agrees? Who else wants to see more Cress and Thorne action?  *raises hand*

What Really Happened?

I knew it! I knew Thorne harbored some true feelings for Cress. I thought it was so brilliant how Marissa Meyer drew them together and made him confess. You guys remember? When they were liked disguised as some of the wealthy citizens invited by the Queen, Cress caught him kissing another girl. What she didn't know was that the girl actually glamoured herself as Cress and Thorne was kissing the girl passionately like he was kissing Cress. Does that make sense? Sorry if I'm confusing you but if you read it, you know what I'm talking bout!

Expectation #4

This is probably the most horrifying expectation but I really hope that Levana dies. Is it mean of me to hate her this much? I know I haven't read Fairest yet so I don't quite understand her side of the story and this is just my opinion.

What Really Happened?

Okay for the first time in reading this entire series, I actually shed a baby tear for Levana. I never thought this moment in time would come but when she was all tortured and telling her life story of how she was bullied by Queen Channary, I shed a man tear. In the end she got what was coming. But a single gunshot? I'm sure she deserves more like perhaps being thrown off of a cliff.

Expectation #5

I TOTALLY expect Cinder and Kai to get married.Yeah I understand they're both from different planets and once Cinder reclaims her throne, she'll be Queen of Luna. They could still have a marriage union and unite the two planets. I just don't want them to be apart on two different planets. Cinder might find someone new and same goes for Kai, which is unacceptable!

What Really Happened?

I'm done. I'm so done with life right now. In short, they didn't get married and I'm :(

Were you let down by any of your expectations?

Triple Moon by Melissa de la Cruz + A Word From the Author

**I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from Penguin Random House. This has not affected my review**

From the New York Times bestselling author of Blue Bloods and Witches of East End

After they cause a terrible accident at their old high school, twin witches Mardi and Molly Overbrook are sent to live with their "Aunt" Ingrid Beauchamp in North Hampton, on Long Island's mist-shrouded East End. Because the twins cannot control their powers, their father begs Ingrid to tame them over the summer, before the White Council exiles the girls to Limbo.

Trouble continues to bubble and boil when the girls meet the younger Gardiner boys, who are just as handsome as sexy as their older kin. But all is not as it seems. As Ingrid helps the girls learn to control their magical umpulses, Mardi and Molly have just summer to figure out how to grow up, how to love, and how to be a family.

Get it now!

Plot

We aren't getting enough of supernatural literature that portrays these beings in a serious and non ludicrous way. Every witch book I've read this year has either been too absurd for my liking or it just doesn't have the writing style I'm looking for. Triple Moon is the only exception. If you've never read Melissa de la Cruz's writing before, you should know that it's totally sarcastic and entertaining in a way that's not annoying. She's a masterful storyteller who also has a talent for weaving in several other twists and magical elements.

I took a particular liking to this book with the mention of twin witches, or what I like to call them, twitches. A brief summary of this book would perhaps go like this: Mardi and Molly Overbrook seek refuge in North Hampton with their "aunt" Ingrid after causing some major trouble back home and causing two kids to get hit by a train. The White Council is not happy with their behavior and is afraid that people will start linking the deaths to witchcraft. As Mardi and Molly waste their summers in North Hampton they, in the end, seek the answer they've been looking for that doesn't hold them responsible for the deaths of the two other students and find love in the same place. They may be witches who love to fool around, but they aren't murderers. A truly inspiring tale about how a sibling's bond is stronger than black magic at work. Her plot and synopsis set up for a really riveting story, which I found I couldn't stop reading at any time. I was always so eager to pick back up the book.

She brings deception and lies to a whole new level with characters that have ulterior motives and makes you start to ask yourself, "who can I really trust?

Characters

I took the opportunity to compare the twins in this book with the actions and personalities of me and my sister because I am indeed a twin, for those who didn't know. It's hard to write about twins if you're not one yourself. I definitely think Melissa de la Cruz did a great job for someone who doesn't have personal experience with being a twin, but at the same time it didn't fit with me as much as it could've. I liked how there was a lot of bickering between Mardi and Molly. That has been established in every sibling relationship. But where is the love? Twins are supposed to share an unshakable bond, and even with all the fighting, they're supposed to get along more than half of the time.

I just didn't get enough of the love. I felt that 80% of the time they were always fighting or sneering and jeering at each other's comments. And it wasn't until the end or the middle that you finally saw the two understanding their bond and reconnecting more than they ever were.

Romance

Melissa's romance is flooding me with all the memories of Jennifer L Armentrout and Gena Showalter. If you're a sucker for Jen's romance, I can assure you that Melissa's is not that far off. She takes sexy to a whole new level with incredibly beautiful witches and mouthwatering male characters.

If you couldn't tell, I adored this book. It's definitely taught me to have a greater appreciation for books about the supernatural, especially because I haven't been taking a liking towards the genre lately. This book has everything you could want from a YA book, and I just hope I'll have the chance to get an advanced copy of the second book (if she so chooses to write one).

And now... a word from Melissa de la Cruz!

Prompt: You've written many books before including The Ring and the Crown, Blue Bloods, and The Witches of East End. How do you write so many books and yet make sure that all of them are unique in their own way? Do you take ideas from a past book you've written and put them in a new one?

Each book I write is a reflection of my current obsessions and interests. No, I don’t take ideas from past books and put them in new ones. Because when I’m done with a book, I’m also done with that idea already. I want to try out new ones.

Some obsessions transform into other similar shapes – for instance, I love the idea of twins, so I have a lot of twins in my books, from Jack and Mimi Force to Mardi and Molly Overbrook.

The books are unique because my interests are varied and I am curious about many things. For Triple Moon, I was interested in exploring a competitive sisterhood that was different from Ingrid and Freya’s relationship – with Mardi and Molly, they’re so close so they try to act very differently to each other as a reaction to each other almost. Mardi is the “rebel” and Molly is the “princess” but in truth, they’re very similar people. But who you are in the family is a reaction to your other siblings. My sister and I are very “different” in that a lot of who she was as a child was a reaction to the role I already played. I find family dynamics fascinating.

It’s not hard to write many different books when you are interested in many different things, I feel very lucky that I get to explore my obsessions in many different books and genres. After writing Blue Bloods, I felt like I had tapped out the ‘tragic love story’ ‘forbidden love story’ angle with Jack and Sky, but when I wrote Witches of East End, I realized I had another twist on it, with Freya and Killian.

As a writer, I totally believe in the idea of play, as Elizabeth Gilbert describes in “Big Magic” – in that your work means everything and nothing, and that it is all a game. That’s something I say to my writer friends all the time “It’s all a game!” You can’t take it seriously. You have to take your work lightly, in that while you put all your effort and life’s blood into it, you also have to shrug and let it go.

I had a day job for nine years, I was a computer programmer and a journalist and a fashion editor, flip-flopping between my steady gig in corporate America and my freelance gigs in magazines and websites. When I sold my first novel in 1999, it was the most validating experience in my life. But after the book sold I was stymied for two years, paralyzed by what I would do next. When your dreams come true, what happens after? Thankfully I got over it, took any gig I could, and after two years of nothing I sold five book proposals – two YA books, 2 nonfiction books and 1 adult novel. The YA career took off and I published the fun non-fiction books, but I never did publish my second adult novel that I had sold, I returned the advance and it took ten years to return to the adult space, and when I did, it was with Witches of East End.

I’m happy to be back in that universe, it’s a fun one based the time my husband and I had a house in Shelter Island. I hope you enjoy it!

FINALLY -- The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey

Title: The Fifth Wave
Author: Rick Yancey
Pages: 457 pages
Published: May 7th 2013
Genre: Science Fiction, Apocalyptic
Source: Hardcover from Barnes & Noble
Rating:
After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother-- or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

Get it now (if you haven't already)!

HOLY. BABY. JESUS.

Envisioning what the world would look life after an invasion from otherworldly beings is not easy. And it's been proven many times in literature. We have Stephanie Meyer with The Host, Pittacus Lore's I Am Number Four series, and a whole lot of other alien-integrated stories. Aliens can either be a scary or funny topic, depending on which way you want to go. And, of course, Rick Yancey instead decided to take neither road-- he took a totally unexpected and brand new path in the world we know of aliens.

Yancey's writing has a hint of seriousness. If you'd imagine what the world would be like after an alien invasion, The Fifth Wave is a very close chronicle of the events that would occur. He creates the tactic of the aliens, which are called waves. And after every wave, a huge amount of people die until there is no one left. The first wave is darkness, the second is chaos, and the third is pestilence (is that how it's spelled), which is an unstoppable airborne virus used to wipe out the humans. Ooooohhh aaahhhh, yes these aliens are very smart. Take away the power and it's the one thing any human on the planet can't handle or recuperate from. Because as tough and hard as it is to accept, we've gone way beyond our boundaries in technology and there is no un-discovering what we've discovered. Let's face it, we can't live without our technology.

And if this romance isn't enough to start a fire, I don't know what is! I know Rick Yancey is man so how can he just write about such irresistible male protagonists in the story. Or perhaps I'm a little bias after seeing the roles that were cast for the movie. His characters do not disappoint and Cassie is the definition of female representation in YA literature. She's a strong and unwavering soul who doesn't back down from saving her brother even if it means she'll be captured and killed if she does something wrong. She puts her faith in trusting an alien when she knows that she shouldn't but it's the only way to save her brother.

We're granted with such a bright ensemble of characters of all different ages. Cassie, Evan, and Ben who are in their older teenage years. There is Sammy, who is 6-years-old, and he's just the most adorable character everrrr!!! I also liked how we were introduced to a lot of older and adult figures. It's really nice to see how authors make their writing so appealing to all ages.

If you haven't started The Fifth Wave series, you should drop everything and read it now before the movie comes out in January. Think of the end of the world meeting an alien-visitation-kind-of-thing. It's got a thrilling and kick-ass vibe that will leave you on the edge of your seats till the end.

Are you going to start this series? If you've already read the first two books, do you plan on watching the movie?

For those are you who aren't familiar with Nanowrimo, I'd be happy to explain what I know (which isn't a lot). Nanowrimo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It's a month (Nov1 1st-Nov 31st) that is dedicated to writers, readers, and basically anyone that wants to write a novel. I know, you might be thinking why can't people just write novels on their own without this event? Well, it's not that easy. You see, without the incentive to do so, people feel discouraged and give up easily. Nano is a great way to collaborate and work with writing buddies on Skype, Twitter, and Facebook. It also allows you to share your ideas, help others write your story, and get some feedback for your story. There is a set goal word count of 50,000 words, which means you have to write 1,667 words every single day in that month. Nano is an entire month dedicated to the people that want to finally finish a novel but lack the commitment or ideas.

What I expect to get out of Nanowrimo 2015?

  • Indulging in the experience of writing a book. I want to experience how an author feels when they're writing. I admit, it's kind of terrifying because I have no idea how to start, but I've realized it really doesn't matter. Writing comes and goes at your own time and style. Everyone does something different when they write, and we all have different ways of staying focused.
  • Commitment issues. I feel like the word count is a great way for me to stay committed. If I want to win, I need to keep up with the word count every single day. This challenge will definitely improve how well I can commit, and I'm definitely in need of a good project.
  • Finally finishing writing a book. I'm not a writer. I don't like writing as much as writing, but there are times when I just want to write. It's always been a dream of mine to completely finish writing a book. I never imagine getting published but I want to feel the satisfactory feeling of completely a book.
  • Making friends. I always want to meet new people in whatever I embark on so this one isn't such a big surprise. You can meet so many other writers on the forums and even on Twitter.

Some Personal Tips

  • Say no to Facebook and other distracting internet servers. If you're using Skype or Twitter to talk to your writing buddy, that's fine. I'm talking about those that get caught up on Youtube, Netflix, or Facebook talking to their friends. Just turn off chat or send a blast to everyone that informs them about how you'll be unavailable for the time being.
  • Do not read anything you've written. If you go back and read, you're going to edit. That's exactly what you're not supposed to do! Nanowrimo wasn't created so that you'd have a polished, ready-to-be-published book by the end. It was created so that those who don't write a book on their free time, finally have an event where they are encouraged to sit down and write and actually FINISH their books! Don't think that you need perfect grammar or spelling, or even the most sophisticated use of words. Just finish the damn thing and then you can go back and edit! Escape your inner editor.
  • Write every single day. If you forget to write on one day, you can make up the word count the next day. But let's just say you don't write for two days. The work will pile up faster than you know it and soon, you won't be able to catch up. It's harder to catch up than to write every single day.
  • Think about the prize on the other side. If you get discouraged throughout the process (because it does get tiring and hard to manage), think about what you will gain when you're done. 1) Winning and getting the prizes :D 2) Finishing a book or writing 50,000 words of it 3) Making new friends and having a winner badge on your profile
  • Have fun! If you're not having fun while writing, then you really shouldn't continue because that will be reflected in your work.
