Divergent by Veronica Roth

Genre: YA dystopian
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue-- Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is-- she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are--and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she  unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, Tris also learns that her secret might help her save the ones she loves . . . or it might destroy.

I was glad to be roaming back into the genre I was born to read: Dystopian. I had such high expectations in starting this trilogy because of all the hype around the movie, and not to mention, the new movie Insurgent. To some extent, this book did achieve my expectations but there were also some dull moments in the book that had me rethinking whether I should continue the series or just read the first book.

Divergent takes place in a broken society split into give factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the intelligent), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful) and Candor (the honest). These five factions are all based off of a certain virtue, an ideal that the creators thought was lacking in their old society. Each faction is unique and stays very humble to their ideals, even to the point of depth. But in the depths and small holes of society there are those certain few that are, say, different than others. They are called Divergent and the main character Tris, falls under that group as she has an ability to manipulate simulations in ways others can't. The Divergent are scorned and considered dangerous. So her job is to make sure no one ever finds out, not even her own parents.

The beginning of the book was surprisingly slow. For a YA dystopian I would've expected a more upbeat beginning, but the middle and the end of the book make up for the dull beginning. I think the reason I hated the beginning of the book so much because of the setup of the plot and the world building. I feel like the author was giving us quite a lot of an information dump. I'm usually fine with stories that need a lot of time to develop some background information and set up world for the characters to live in, but it wasn't done so great in this book.

What I liked? The plot was so different from anything I'd ever seen before. Not similar to The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner, and yet the book became something else all on its own. There was a steamy romance, just like there should be one in every YA dystopian novel. And the romance wasn't anything annoying or distracting, it just kind of flowed through the book like it was meant to be. I mean no annoying characters in a book finally!

"We're all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering our own. I don't want to do that. I want to be brace, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest."

- Divergent, Tobias

I'd like to commend Veronica Roth on another thing she did superbly well in her book. Yes, let's talk about how she described the simulations, like when we're actually following Tris and Four into their fear simulation. It's hard to talk and write about one's subconscious when you're not really experiencing it first hand, but Veronica Roth seems to have left me flabbergasted! When we were in Four's fear simulation, omg guys, the way she described his fears!! It made me feel like I was actually in the book helping him conquer his fears. It's extraordinary, really something to look forward to in the next two books ya know: more subconscious scenes, more romance.

After taking the faction quiz my results came out inconclusive.... LOL JK! I'm Erudite! I was hoping to get Dauntless, but Erudite is still a fine faction to be apart of. Now ladies... let's talk about Four, or Tobias (whatever you want to kill him). LOOK AT HIS FACE!! LOOK AT HIS DAMN SEXY FACE!! I swear I just want to meet him someday. I must take this time to thank the bloggers and booktubers of the world for convincing me to read Divergent. I LOVE YOU TO THE MOON AND BACK! Happy reading everyone and join be back in a few days for the review of the second book in the Divergent series, Insurgent.

Published: March 14th, 2006
Genre: Historical Fiction
It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will be busier still.

By her brother's graveside, Liesel's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger's Handbook, left behind there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery.

So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordian-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found.

But these are dadangerousimes. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jewish fist-fighter in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up, and closed down.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Marcus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

After an endless amount of recommendations and a horde of crazy fangirling teenagers, I decided to pick up the historical fiction novel, The Book Thief. I'm slightly impressed by how much I enjoyed this book. It's been a goal of mine to read more of the genres I tend to neglect. So I guess, here's to historical fiction being my new favorite genre!

Historical fiction is the perfect genre to be reading during the winter time. It was time for me to finally read this book. I had to take some thorough notes for this book because I haven't read historical fiction in so long. I don't quite remember how to comprehend what I'm reading.

The Unique Narrator The narrator of this book was Death. And although it's not totally given to us that it certainly is Death, it is definitely implied that it is some spiritual being close to the Grim Reaper. When we first think about WWI and the regime of Hitler, the first think we think about is death. Therefore, I think it was quite appropriate Mr. Zusak to tell the story from a POV that was well familiar with death and was even perhaps associated with it.

The Writing I don't think I've ever read such ingenious writing before. The writing flowed perfectly and even though this was a quite lengthy book, I had no trouble flying through it. The title chapters foreshadowed what the next part of the story would be about. And the power of his words made the tense times in the story very nerve-racking and the elated parts in the book very enjoyable.

The Characters If you were to take all of these characters and drop them into different books, they wouldn't fit well with that book because Marcus Zusak's class are utterly phenomenal and unique. They were meant to be in this book and in within its story. There wasn't a single dull moment for either of them. And throughout the book I had to say that my favorite character was Hans Hubberman, the foster father of the main protagonist. He was oddly the most considerate character I've ever read about in a book and he was selfless, putting Liesel's needs before his own.

The Historical Aspects I think the fact that this book was interwoven with the time period of the early 1940's was really unique. Because in the early 1940's there was so much going on in history, like WWI and, of course, there was Adolf Hitler. Whether Marcus Suzak actually experience this time in period or did the proper research, the historical facts were superbly intertwined with the story of the book. I couldn't help but enjoy reading about it.

The Feels Back and forth, left and right, this book made me shatter and curl myself up into a ball! Don't read this book if you weren't mentally stable for The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. I couldn't help crying at the end. And for anyone who has read this, what did you think about that ending?

After I finished the book I immediately went to watch the movie on my computer. In all honestly I loved the book a little bit more. I think it's probably safe to say that The Book Thief was my favorite read of 2014.

Today we're leaving the genre of fantasy and science-fiction to talk about a historical fiction/romance/mystery thriller novel: The Walled City. A terrifying and heart-pounding book that had me questioning myself all throughout.

This book has taken the meaning of reading to a whole new level! In this heart-warming story of family and risking your life to save a loved one, we have many different POV's and narratives. There are three main narrators of the book: Dai, Jin Ling, and Mei Yee. I can't even express how much I loved the three diverse point of views featured in this book!

The first protagonist we meet is Jin Ling, a girl who is disguised as a guy to search for her long lost sister beacuse being a girl means you would be taken to the brothels. Dai is a ex-con just trying to clear his name with the help of Jin Ling. And finally Mei Yee, well she's trapped in a brothel! Yes a brothel! As scary as that sounds and as miserable, she's desperate to find a way out of the tight cells and the lurking hands of the men that pay for a little one on one time with some of the girls. I thought that Graudin took the aspect of this sad topic and turned it into something adventurous. There isn't a lot of world building, and I wouldn't expect there to be. This book takes place in a real setting- Kowloon the Walled City. The setting that this author chose was actually quite a hard one to elaborate on, and I'm surprised she did such a great job. I loved her story that she chose to place in this particular setting.

The Walled City was such a dark and compelling story of love and terror, even in the most terrifying and frightening places of the world. And the author deals with touchy topics such as murder and human-trafficking. My heart has been moved by this book. And it's really a genre that's great for those mixed genre lovers. We see the aspect of historical fiction in the setting, a little mystery in the plot, and a lot of romance and contemporary in the relationship between Dai and Mei Yee.

I wish I had gone into this book not knowing anything about it. It probably would have worked out better that way, since we get so little from the synopsis anyways. Dai has 18 days to clear his name, which is why the book is split into 18 parts. Each part is labeled with the number of days he had left, and oh my god, I loved it so much. This book was amazing and because I read it in 2014, it's eligible to make it on to my 2014 Top Book List. Highly recommended. Just leave this blog post right now and please check it out before the year ends.

Let's Discuss: My Braces Experience + MASSIVE GIVEAWAY

It is indeed weird. For the past two years, I've endured the names brace face, metal mouth, robot girl and a whole lot more. And all because I had braces! It's actually a funny story because I had retainers to begin with and my doctor told me that would be it. But because I refused to wore my retainers before and after I ate, I ended up going to the next step- BRACES!

I'm taking them off on December 31st, so it's kind of a long wait for me! But I cannot even begin to tell you how successful this transition has been in my life. I'm loving the results of modern technology on my life and how it's so easy to get your teeth fixed! If you're honestly considering braces but you really don't want to wear it for a year or two, it's definitely worth it!

When I first went to the orthodontists to get them on, I was scared beyond belief. A lot of kids at my school had braces and kept telling me about painful the transition was. In all honestly, the application of the braces itself does not hurt at all!! However, a day after getting the contraption on, and you will start to feel real pain. I think I lost about 9 pounds when I first got my braces because I refused to eat anything! It just hurt that badly.

I've wanted straighter and whiter teeth ever since I knew I could have them, and when the doctor told me I could get braces I was a bit hesitant. Were the two years really worth it? YES THEY TOTALLY WERE! But am I glad to finally be taking them off? YES, I AM MORE THAN EAGER TO RIP THE NASTIES OFF MY TEETH!

Now for all you people who don't care about this discussion post, let's talk about the massive giveaway I'm hosting. When I came home from school one day, I saw a Barnes & Noble card on my table. At first I started panicking and then I started jumping up and down. IT WAS FOR $150 buckaroos! So because I received so much, I'd like to share some Christmas joy with all of you. Stacking the Shelves #9 - Divergent Crazy!

I'm sad to say that the Barnes & Noble near me is closing down for business! And even worse, it's being replaced by a TJ Max! WHY MUST YOU DO THIS HORROR?? After a recent trip, I was able to pick a few things up that were on sale. And I got some books from The Book Depository.

Books I Recieved

Finally reading the Divergent series! I feel sooo sooo accomplished in life now. And I decided to pick up The Book Thief on my way to Barnes & Noble. I figured I was going to treat myself early for Christmas even though I'm broke as hell. After reading Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas, I had to look for the novella The Assassin's Blade. And I'm pretty sure I'm going to love it! New book reviews for the remainder of the month... AND MAYBE A SURPRISE OR TWO!

Disney's Frozen: Book Tag

Welcome back to another winter-filled post! I've been seeing a lot of new tags appear on the blogosphere, so why not create my own?? Today I'm here with a Disney's Frozen Book Tag! I created this book tag and all the questions but I'm not trying to show ownership over the movie Frozen. All credit is given where credit is due. I even have a disclaimed located at the bottom of the blog. So without further ado, here are the questions:

1. "Let It Go"
Pick a book you wouldn't mind parting with.
I have no shame in saying that I wouldn't mind letting go of this book. I bought the entire series on a whim and ended up giving them away in the end. They were not my cup of tea!

2. "In Summer"
Pick a book that you think should only be read in the Summer.
You really can't read this book in any other season. The plot and storyline just wouldn't have been as interesting as it would be if you read it at the beach!

3. "Fixer Upper"
Pick a book that you wish had an alternate ending.
I wish this book ended the way I wanted it to end. I'm not gonna spoil anything but there are some characters that end up dead.... and not the ones you're expecting to die. I wish a lot of things happened, but nothing ever seemed to be in my favor.

4. Olaf the Snowman
Pick a book that you'd like to give a warm hug.
I want to kiss and hug this book! Morgan Matson is such an amazing author! And, of course, I wouldn't mind giving her a hug. This is the perfect book to read in the Summer, which totally contradicts our Frozen theme.

5. Elsa the Snow Queen
Pick a book that made you so mad, you just wanted to freeze it!
For all you Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices fandoms, I think you and I both know how this book ended. Did I like it? HECKK NOO. Was I happy for Tessa? Meh, sure why not!

6. Anna and Kristoff
Pick your favorite book couple!
This is from a recent read: Heir of Fire. Celaena and Chaol are my ultimate OTP! This isn't a surprise to anyone that's been reading my past Throne of Glass series reviews.

7. Anna and Elsa
Pick your favorite sibling relationship in a book.
The beautiful Alec and Isabelle Lightwood from The Mortal Instruments series! I think they have the most exciting relationship, since they're Shadowhunters. They live no ordinary lives!

8. Prince Hans of the Southern Isles
Pick a villain that seemed good at first, but ended up causing a heap of trouble.
Weren't we all deceived by Luke in the beginning of The Lightning Thief? I wouldn't have thought for a second that he could have stolen the lightning bolt! Look at that face! It's way too innocent...

Hope you all enjoyed this tag. If you would like to answer these questions on your own tag post, be sure to leave a link to your post down below so I could check out your answers. I would also like to see some of the tags you created yourself! Check out Erin from The Hardcover Lover. She created her own meme called Soundtrack Sunday.

**I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review**

Finally a male protagonist! Our main character Isaac wakes up and finds that his parents are missing and his house is a mess! His friend Demetre all of a sudden finds Isaac and says the same thing has happened to him. At first I thought this was gonna be another cliche kind of parents MIA story, but I didn't get that vibe at all. The Whispers of the Fallen by J.D. Netto is fast-paced fantasy novel that will keep anyone on his/her toes but comes with its faults as well.

The two main characters later confront a Fallen Star, which is supposed to be this evil character in the book but doesn't sound so evil to me. But before the chaos is able to happen, Devin- this half human, half Fallen Star- comes in and saves Isaac and Demetre. I really enjoyed Devin's character! I think compared to Isaac and Demetre's character, Devin wasn't so whiny and annoying! Like I understand your parents are missing and you have no idea what's going on, but that doesn't mean you have to ask a million questions until your head explodes! I just had a hard time with Demetre, who kept doubting his friend's trust in Devin.

In the beginning of the book, I saw yet again another information download scene/section/part/what you call it!. When Isaac and Devin are talking in the carriage, Devin seemed to be pouring out information at that single time! It was a bit confusing and massive all at once. And I never like it when authors don't find the time to spread out this type of useful information, like background information, myths, legends, and other prophecies. It kind of made me feel like that the author wanted to get rid of all the information at once to save the trouble of revealing things in the future.

I think as the story progressed, it definitely improved and got better. It was more alluring and the pace did seem to slow a bit, which allowed for less of the information download. The characters got less annoying (I guess, LOL)! YAY. J.D. Netto is such an engaging author and his story was gripping. He has the ability to create such wild and fantastic stories that have a dash of horror and just a sprinkle of mystery. I really should have read this book during Halloween though!

Clash of the Couples: Blog Tour

Praise for Clash of the Couples

“Clash of the Couples is hilarious and relatable, full of absurd arguments that will leave you shaking your head while feeling better about your own squabbles. Forget spats over money and parenting, these gems include college boobs, food poisoning during a hurricane, and the important question, ‘Would you still think I was hot if I lost all my limbs?’ Highly recommend!”
 ~ Kristi Campbell, Finding Ninee

“One minute it’s so hilarious you’re reading excerpts out loud to your spouse, the next it’s so embarrassingly accurate that you’re hiding it from them.”
~ Vicki Lesage, author of Confessions of a Paris Party Girl

**I received this book for a blog tour for a review**

Funny Story: I was on a 2-hour car trip, and I was reading this book! So everyone's quiet and there's no noise but.... then I suddenly erupt in this maniac-like laughter. My whole family's just staring at me, wondering why I'm laughing so hard over a book. I wish I could have told them what I was reading, but I don't think they would've found the time to listen to me unfold the details of this book!

At first I didn't know this book was a collection of stories from multiple authors! I liked the different writing styles and OMG OMG the titles of some of these stories were soooo soooo amusing! Some of my favorites were: The Cold War, Don't Spill the Beer, Dear, and Fetus, Take the Wheel!

Really...honestly... I can't relate to anything that was said in this book because I, myself, have never been in a substantial relationship nor have I ever been married... wow wow that's a long way from now! But I just thought the jokes that were cracked in this book were so cheesy and really comical. I didn't even need to be married to understand half the things that were said, which ultimately says something about the relationships in the world today *ahem ahem*

Every time the couples argued, I compared it to a moment in my life when I saw a couple doing the same exact thing. It was crazy how relatable this book was. Clash of Couples is an enlightening compilation of stories from some of the most hysterical authors. Definitely not something I would have picked up by myself however D:
