Book #13: If I Stay by Gayle Forman

(Summary from goodreads)

Just listen, Adam says with a voice that sounds like shrapnel.

I open my eyes wide now.
I sit up as much as I can.
And I listen.

Stay, he says.

Choices. Seventeen-year-old Mia is faced with some tough ones: Stay true to her first love—music—even if it means losing her boyfriend and leaving her family and friends behind?

Then one February morning Mia goes for a drive with her family, and in an instant, everything changes. Suddenly, all the choices are gone, except one. And it's the only one that matters.

If I Stay is a heartachingly beautiful book about the power of love, the true meaning of family, and the
choices we all make.

If I could show you just how many tissues I had on my nightstand while reading this book, I would. Just by looking at the cover of this book, it was very reminiscent of the Lovely Bones' cover. And when I read the book, I noticed these similarities. Mia and Susie Salmon actually had a lot more in common than they would've ever thought! In fact, the death scenes of both these books happened fast and were very brief, which was how I liked it. They were short, straight-forward, and morbid at times.
I don't cry often but when I do, my eyes get swollen with salty tears and my nose gets all slimy and disgusting. I was bawling through this book! I tried. I really did. I forced myself not to cry, but I couldn't get myself to stop. I was like a seeping waterfall. The beginning was dreadfully melancholic. Just imagine seeing yourself unconscious in the midst of a car crash! Mind-blown. Poof...
The narrator, Mia, was very pessimistic. She had always thought of herself as a nobody. At first, she didn't even believe Adam would end up with someone like her, which was quite sad. I mean as girls, we strive to look down on ourselves, but she was over exaggerating.
If I'm not mistaken, this book was actually turned into a movie that will be released August 22, 2014. If I manage to stow away some tickets, i will be delighted to do a movie review and compare it to the book. I'm actually pretty excited for the movie to come out! And when I heard that Chloe Grace Moretz was going to be playing Mia, I went ballistic!
In the summary it says that all her choices are suddenly gone and she is left with just one. I finally realized what that one choice was- "If I stay. If I live. It's up to me." Basically, she struggled to make the right decision. Throughout the end of the story she begins to realize that dying is actually easier than living. At that point, the story just gets so, so, so gloomy. The mood changes dramatically. I also felt like the flashbacks throughout the book were just downright annoying! I mean make up your mind- past or present?
I just realized... that there is a second book to this series. Am I going to pick it up? This is the moment of truth...
*drumroll, please*
Yes, I do believe I will be picking up the second book. If you haven't read this book, I would highly recommend it! Not quite a tearjerker, but it had just the right amount of heartbreak to make me start tearing. Now, for a very brief character analysis.

Character Analysis: (Very, very short)
Mia- There had been a lot of small talk about her. She was indeed annoying and insecure at times. I wish Mia would cherish the beautiful face and personality she had been given. Most of the time she would look down on herself and when she was with Adam, she never felt like she belonged. It was almost too sad to read.

Adam- Adam was what every girl would hope for in a stereotypical 'bad boy' teenager- smoking hot, a guitar player, and did I forget smoking hot? All the girls swooned over him! But in the end however, he ended up with Mia. And this was no mistake. His love for her was pure and not nonexistent.

Kim- You brought Adam to Mia; You saved her. Bless you, my dear.
