TEASER

Seeing nothing but darkness through door one heightened my awareness, and the mist that slowly crept out like thin layer of clouds, spreading and covering our feet, brought another level of fright. The ground started to shake, then a sound like thunder boomed, getting louder…louder…until it sounded more like a stampede.

My imagination got the best of me as I envision buffaloes charging for us. Roaring sounds burst in the air when a dozen of the Cerberuses tried to charge through at once. I would have preferred the buffaloes, but instead, we got Hades’s guard dogs.

Their glowing red eyes were what I saw first, then their vampire like teeth, and last three heads to a body. With serpent’s heads on the tips of their tales and lion like claws, they looked like they could rip us to shreds as they dashed for us as if we were a gourmet meal.

“Cerberus. I should have guessed.” Zara quaked, standing next to Tara. Extending both of their arms up, they were creating a shied. Blazing light engulfed us.

“You should have guessed sooner, but I don’t think it would have mattered.” Nick’s eyes glowed, ready to fight. “Here puppy, puppy. Let’s play.”

Blogish Updates: New Design and Co-blogger at Dee's Reads!

Hello all you wonderful people of the internet. I haven't done a Blogish Updates in such a long time because I didn't have anything exciting to share but today, that all changes because I've got some exciting news. I have a lot of news actually and I'm pretty excited for this New Year! So let's get into it shall we? And all these events are pretty long overdue!

Co-Blogging at Dee's Reads
A few weeks ago I submitted an application to co-blog at Diamond's blog Dee's Reads. She recently emailed me back saying she would totally accept me and we would ride off into the sunset with out unicorns.. well it's not that magical but she basically asked me to co-blog and co-own the blog with her. I gracefully accepted with glee because I've been familiar with her blog for so long and she's basically the greatest. We've been great book besties so far, emailing each other every day and working together on new ideas to make the blog even greater. Diamond is very determined to make my blogging atmosphere at Dee's Reads very nice, and together we're going to gather new blog names and designs. This was probably my most exciting thing that I wanted to tell. So check out her blog HERE

New Blog Design
I know, I know. I just changed my blog design (more like a few months back), and I've had my time with it and loved every second of it... but I do feel like it has really grown on me and it's not as good as the time I asked for it. I've grown from then, seen some other blogs, and learned a lot! This new design will be totally different with a more simple design! I've been getting complaints that the background takes too long to load on some computers and the graphics and sidebar gadgets are very crowded. I absolutely love the design, don't get wrong, Livia from Butterfly-o-Meter did such a fantastic job, and I'm glad I was able to work with her on this amazing project. But now it's time to give things here a fresh and new look for 2015. I'm really glad that she has agreed to work with me again in the next month on a new project for something fancier and a little more simplistic.

Goshhh I'm so excited!!

Late Stacking the Shelves #13

This was supposed to go up on Saturday and then things got crazy and it was pushed back, but that's okay! I went a little crazy with Chinese New Year money and just cash that I had in the back of my pocket from previous birthdays or holidays. I didn't spend it all but I did knock some books off of my wishlist with the books that I got. I think some I'm going to re-haul because I don't remember what books I hauled last week and I'm too lazy to check lol. Enjoy though :D

Some of you are uber-excited to hear my thoughts on reading Harry Potter for the first time because well it might be one your favorite series, and I know I always get excited when someone talks about my favorite books! Harry Potter did not let me down! 14 years of constant yearning and hype, I finally picked the first book the series alongside some of my friends at school.

In an unfortunate turn of events I did watch the movie before I read this book so I was kind of nodding at everything that occurred in the book. I was so super excited and jumpy when I was reading this book because I recall towards how much I loved the movie. And I got a major kick out of reinventing the Harry Potter series to myself.

Needless to say I don't like the Durleys very much... ahem ahem. I mean, if I was stuck with my aunt and uncle, I would pray that they would be nothing like Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. Harry was such an amazing character, and awfully young at this point in the story. Like I could tell that it was such a young and naive character that has just been exposed to his true self. He was also strong and very true to himself. He rooted for what he believed in and wasn't backed down by anyone not even Snape himself.

I was so reminiscent of the movie because I did watch the movies before I read the books. I swear the book was 100% better. I am hoping for a lot more character development over the next few books because I didn't get very much in this one, but it was a great read. This series is really living up to my expectations.

A Discussion wouldn't be a discussion without some tinking questions (yes tinking, not thinking).
1. Who's your favorite character so far in the book?
Harry, obviously. Not just because he's the main character in the book but I have my reasons for liking him. He's just so lovable as a character and

2. What did you think of Severus Snape in the beginning? In the end?
In the beginning I really didn't understand why Snape was so mean to Harry. First I just thought he was a douche. But in the end, I really understood his characters sympathized with him. He's awesome and I lurvvv him for trying to save Harry countless times!

3. Would you play Quidditch??
HELL YESS!! I would sign up to be in the team and just be the swooping up and down, high and low to get that golden snitch. Would I be good at it? Yeah that's a whole different situation. I would probably suck so bad!

Who else read Harry Potter for the first time? If you've read the book already don't be afraid to discuss it!

THE RETURN Excerpt:

“Is it so hard to say her name?” Apollo asked. “I think a few minutes ago was the first time you’ve said her name since after you two fought Ares.”

My jaw ached from how hard I was grinding my molars.

“Whatever,” Apollo said, his attention returning to the godsforsaken ceiling fan chain. “Don’t talk about it. Be the best issues-boy you can be.”

I took a deep breath. It didn’t help. “I don’t have issues.”

He tipped his head back and roared with laughter. Paintings of the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains rattled. “You have more baggage than United Airlines. Cross that out. You have more issues than Medusa, and that woman makes the inside of a cat lady’s thoughts seem like a calming place.”

“I hate you.”

“You wound me straight to the heart, bud.”

My patience was just about the same as that of Cerberus after someone tried to take a squeaky toy away from him. “What about the girl, Apollo?”

He dropped down into the leather chair, his large form nearly swallowing it. “It’s a long story.”

“Go figure.”

That comment went largely ignored. “It all started with your birth, so there’s something else you can add to your mountain of suck.”

I wondered if there was an anti-god repellent and where I could find it.

“We knew the moment you were born that there would be the possibility of a God Killer, since Alexandria was on schedule to make an appearance a few years later. We didn’t know who among us was responsible for your birth, but we knew they’d want to use you for their own gain.”

“This walk down history lane is boring me.” I crossed my arms.

Unaffected, he eased himself closer to the bed, kicked his booted feet up on it, and stretched out leather-clad legs. “The risk of you two joining forced us to come up with a contingency plan in case the proverbial poo hit the fan.”

My brows knitted. There was something wrong with hearing Apollo use the word “poo” in a sentence.

THE RETURN Synopsis:

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off...

It's been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they've given him have been violent and bloody--which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He's got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy's deal might be, but it's a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

The Glass Arrow by Kristen Simmons [NO SPOILERS]

Title: The Glass Arrow
Author: Kristen Simmons
Pages: 336 pages
Published: February 10th, 2015 by Tor Teen
Genre: Dystopian YA (I consider this dystopian)
Rating:

The Handmaid's Tale meets Blood Red Road in Glass Arrow, the story of Aya, who lives with a small group of women on the run from the men who hunt them, men who want to auction off breeding rights to the highest bidder.

In a world where females are scarce and are hunted, then bought and sold at market for their breeding rights, 15-year-old Aya has learned how to hide. With a ragtag bunch of other women and girls, she has successfully avoided capture and eked out a nomadic but free existence in the mountains. But when Aya's luck runs out and she's caught by a group of businessmen on hunting expedition, fighting to survive takes on a whole new meaning.

It's that time again when I'm in one of my many horrible, nasty reading slumps, and I just can't seem to get out of it no matter what book I try and read. Well let me just say ladies and gents, that The Glass Arrow is my life saver and book-slump picker-upper. I am in shock by how awesome this book is. There seems to be really two sides of the story for this book- those who have absolutely loved it and those who didn't enjoy it. Sit down and grab a cup of coffee because it's going to take a while to get all of my feels out for this book!

Now this book was very reminiscent of the book The Walled City by Ryan Graudin in ways that the dystopian societies of both books were similar. In both societies, women are "hunted", for a lack of a better term and auctioned off to potential buyers who either want to impregnate them or keep them for pleasure. I get so emotional when I read books with these types of story because sometimes I wonder what would happen if I was in their shoes, however the writing and characters continue to bring me joy time and time again. Our main character Aya really is a fighter and just like the MC in The Walled City, she was desperate to do just about anything to escape. And I liked, for the most part, that she teamed up with the most inconspicuous of characters. Be prepared to find a lot of running and fighting in this book because it was all action and fun! Never a dull moment and I had no excuse to put the book down.

Silly YA romances? After finishing this book I didn't feel like the author focused on the romance between characters, and that's not necessarily a bad thing! She excelled in creating at least some romantic tension between characters Aya and Kiran. Ohh boy Kiran was mysterious and intriguing. Kristen Simmons is full of surprises and after every chapter, she left me clutching onto my reading chair, scared and worried about the character's well-beings.

Throughout the beginning and the middle of the book I was so confused as to why this book was called "The Glass Arrow". It wasn't mentioned till, maybe, I was like about 300 pages in the book and then the light bulb appeared over my head as to why. A very peculiar title at first glance if you ask me, but as I continued I'm glad it made more and more sense.

So where do I start with this fantasy-filled book? Umm let me just throw out a couple of words out there! Amazing, Fantastic, Surprising, Enthralling. I was not expecting to like Red Queen as much as I do. I think I've found something other to obsess over than Throne of Glass, which you guys know is one of my favorite books to date! Right now just saying: READ THE RED QUEEN or don't bother reading any other fantasy book (ouch! That sounded kind of harsh). Ohh god it's such a perfect book I'm so glad it turned out the way I wanted it to be!!!

Yesss!!

Let's start with the biggest thing in this book: world-building. Because the synopsis of this book sets up for this promising and action-packed plot of an amazing story, we better get some awesome world building. Well Victoria Aveyard really hit it spot on with this one. Really definining the fine line between the Red and Silver-blooded people. The Reds live in the slums where they have no healers, are conscripted into war without choice, and barely have any jobs to provide their families with food and shelter. It was so heartfelt, in fact, enough to really make me pity them and feel so broken and sad inside. The Silvers with their palaces, royal buffets, and an endless amount of clothing. Not to mention that they had healers who could heal them from just about every scratch (well not death :P)

If you asked me why I would recommend this book I'd mostly say because of the ingenious plot-building. Aveyard damn well knows how to tell a story and spin you around a web until you think somethings going to happen but then it doesn't. And the characters that you least expect to die, do. I was definitely intrigued at first by the synopsis because it was rare for a girl to be red-blooded but gifted with powers and it was interesting to see how Aveyard really weaved together this brand new species.

Characters. We have a slight love triangle in the beginning but I like how the author made it very clear in the end who she was going to end up with and not leave it hanging or for argument in the second book. Her female character was so similar to Celaena Sardothien from the Throne of Glass series, in fact, they could be twins! Very strong-willed and always willing to stick her nose in the safety of the people she loves. Our male characters are handsome and charming, as always. And the villains are evil and narcissistic and just the way I like it! I swear this book is literally perfect in execution! GIVE ME THE SECOND BOOK! GIVE IT TO ME! I'm so sad that this book was just published and therefore the second book won't be coming anytime soon, will it?

Sad Yelling

If you LOVE fantasy, and I mean love and you're eager for something that you'll finish in just a couple of hours, pick up Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. An engaging tale, meaningful characters, and a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more is on the way...

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Title: The Raven Boys
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Pages: 416 pages
Published: September 18th, 2012
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Genre: Urban Fantasy

"There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St.Mark's Eve," Neeve said. "Either you're his true love... or you killed him."

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them- not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglioby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can't entirely explain. He has it all- family money, good looks, devoted friends- but he's looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Rave Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

r as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she's not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we've never been before.

*mind blows up* This book literally took me on a roller coaster of emotions and feels and like how I feel on all amusement park, I got a bit sick and nauseous. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, like it could somehow sneak it's way into my favorites of 2015, but there were so many quirks that really made me hate it all at the same time.

If you're looking for an urban fantasy psychological thriller, hurry up and start this series! It came me one of the biggest headaches ever because there were moments where I had to sneak back a few pages to reread what I didn't understand. The first 100 pages of this book were confusing, very, very confusing. I didn't get the story up until the main characters and "the Raven Boys" had actually met. The synopsis on the back of the book doesn't give us anything and just confuses the crap out of me. I will somewhat do a better job at explaining it:

Blue Sargent comes from a long line of psychics, however, she can't predict the future. She does though enhance the powers and energies of the people and things around her and that, is powerful all on its own. When she get's her own future told, they tell her that she will kiss the one she loves and he will die. The "one" happens to be Gansey, a handsome student of the elite private school Aglionby. She tries to stay away from him and has a bit of a crush on Adam Parrish, another boy in the Raven Boys group. Together they go on a journey to find the ley lines of Glendower and to save Gansey. What they don't know is secrets and dark magic will unveil itself as they get closer to the energies.

So that basically sums it all up. The beginning was confusing, so I hope I kind of cleared things up for you. But besides that, Maggie Stiefvater really knows how to tell an amazing story about love and the danger behind it. I love the characters- especially Blue. Well for starters, her name is Blue! How freaking awesome is that! She also had a snarky personality and knew how to slap-talk a guy when she was offended. I loved her, not necessarily a female heroine, but an enjoyable character nonetheless. The guys in this book were so freaking mysterious like it was so lyrical how everything came and went together.

There's a lot of drama that goes on and once you get past the beginning, the action never stops and you'll be stuck in such an awesome, fantastical world! I can't wait to see how the story continues in the next two books and am awaiting Gansey's death *looks sinister* No I'm just kidding LOL! I love Gansey. The Raven Boys is a great example of urban fantasy with a very ancient and sinister twists. The book was very dark for most fantasy reads I usually do read, but still excellent!

Reality TV has a dark future in this thought-provoking thriller.

To the people suffering on the war-torn mainland, Bliss Island seems like an idyllic place. And it is: except for the fact that the island is a set, and the islanders' lives are a performance. They're the stars of a hit TV show, Blissful Days- Characters are adored by mainland viewers, yet in constant danger of being cut if their ratings dip too low. And no one really knows what happens to cut Characters.

Nettie Starling knows she's been given the chance of a lifetime when a producer offers suggestions to help her improve her mediocre ratings- especially when those suggestions involve making a move on the boy she's been in love with for years. But she'll soon have to decide how far she's wiling to go to keep the cameras fixed on her... especially when she learns what could happen to her if she doesn't.

**Huge thanks to G.P. Putnam Sons- Penguin Books USA for sending me an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

The synopsis was so freaking amazing! So amazing, in fact, I had to ask the publisher for an early copy to read and review because I couldn't pull myself together anymore. After reading the book and all its entirety, I've come to a conclusion that I have a pretty much love and hate relationship with this book. I hated the beginning (and we'll talk about that later), but I had a soft spot for the way the book ended.

It came as a big as a surprise that this book started with a very confusing conversation between the main protag and her friends Lia and Selwyn. The first piece of dialogue we get is, "Selwyn, tell us now." Tell us what? What is it!?!? The premise of this book offered a thought-provoking, dysoptian book. I didn't get that feeling from the beginning of the book, maybe because it was too difficult to explain the world. And in essence, the world building wasn't that great to begin with. I felt like the author kept getting confused in her own world and how she was going to set up the rules that comes with this type of plot.

As we get more familiar with the characters and story, it gets easier to understand the small things and it actually gets enjoyable. I liked the small quips Lia gave her ex-boyfriend once they were broken up. She was a comical character. I didn't like the main protagonist, Nettie. She was too whiny.  I mean if you like the guy, then go for him. If not, then don't sit there whining about how you didn't go for the guy. It was as simple as that! I like strong female characters, not girls who get weakened by their emotions for a guy. And plus, it was horrible that it took a produced suggesting her to flirt with the boy of her dreams to finally attempt to talk to the boy of her dreams. I think things really kicked off when she met with the producer who gave her the suggestions to improve her writing. I liked it! I liked it very much that there was a sense of this little plot twists.

Not as action-packed and as interesting as I expected it to be, and it was kind of disappointed. I planned on loving this book because of the amazing premise. There was little to no romance, or none that I read about. The romance was almost fake between Nettie and Callen. Even though she was in love with Callen before she as suggested to flirt with him.

There are definitely things I didn't like about this book but there are also a ton of good I thought this book did to me. Scripted by Maya Rock comes out on February 5th, so don't forget to check it out when it comes out to a bookstore near you!
