Reality TV has a dark future in this thought-provoking thriller.

To the people suffering on the war-torn mainland, Bliss Island seems like an idyllic place. And it is: except for the fact that the island is a set, and the islanders' lives are a performance. They're the stars of a hit TV show, Blissful Days- Characters are adored by mainland viewers, yet in constant danger of being cut if their ratings dip too low. And no one really knows what happens to cut Characters.

Nettie Starling knows she's been given the chance of a lifetime when a producer offers suggestions to help her improve her mediocre ratings- especially when those suggestions involve making a move on the boy she's been in love with for years. But she'll soon have to decide how far she's wiling to go to keep the cameras fixed on her... especially when she learns what could happen to her if she doesn't.

**Huge thanks to G.P. Putnam Sons- Penguin Books USA for sending me an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

The synopsis was so freaking amazing! So amazing, in fact, I had to ask the publisher for an early copy to read and review because I couldn't pull myself together anymore. After reading the book and all its entirety, I've come to a conclusion that I have a pretty much love and hate relationship with this book. I hated the beginning (and we'll talk about that later), but I had a soft spot for the way the book ended.

It came as a big as a surprise that this book started with a very confusing conversation between the main protag and her friends Lia and Selwyn. The first piece of dialogue we get is, "Selwyn, tell us now." Tell us what? What is it!?!? The premise of this book offered a thought-provoking, dysoptian book. I didn't get that feeling from the beginning of the book, maybe because it was too difficult to explain the world. And in essence, the world building wasn't that great to begin with. I felt like the author kept getting confused in her own world and how she was going to set up the rules that comes with this type of plot.

As we get more familiar with the characters and story, it gets easier to understand the small things and it actually gets enjoyable. I liked the small quips Lia gave her ex-boyfriend once they were broken up. She was a comical character. I didn't like the main protagonist, Nettie. She was too whiny.  I mean if you like the guy, then go for him. If not, then don't sit there whining about how you didn't go for the guy. It was as simple as that! I like strong female characters, not girls who get weakened by their emotions for a guy. And plus, it was horrible that it took a produced suggesting her to flirt with the boy of her dreams to finally attempt to talk to the boy of her dreams. I think things really kicked off when she met with the producer who gave her the suggestions to improve her writing. I liked it! I liked it very much that there was a sense of this little plot twists.

Not as action-packed and as interesting as I expected it to be, and it was kind of disappointed. I planned on loving this book because of the amazing premise. There was little to no romance, or none that I read about. The romance was almost fake between Nettie and Callen. Even though she was in love with Callen before she as suggested to flirt with him.

There are definitely things I didn't like about this book but there are also a ton of good I thought this book did to me. Scripted by Maya Rock comes out on February 5th, so don't forget to check it out when it comes out to a bookstore near you!

  1. I'm a little anxious about this book now... Slow starts are never my favourite thing and more recently I've had a hard time not getting distracted when it doesn't immediately draw me in. Thinking about checking this one out, great review as always :)

  2. Wow, the premise sounds quite interesting - I'm not sure how it falls into dystopia, but it seems interesting enough. Thanks for putting this under my radar now! Glad you enjoyed the book, lovely review :)

  3. I'm glad I've finally found a positive review of this. I think all the ones I've read from other bloggers I'm following were negative ones. I'm always a bit wary of books that make me super-excited but didn't get the best reviews because I usually feel like I'm setting myself up for a disappointment. However from your review it sounds like a pretty decent book, something that I could really enjoy if I looked over the mistakes you mention above. Anyhow, enough of me. Awesome review!

    1. I've also seem some mixed reviews on this book as well. I enjoyed it but there were some quirks that really annoyed me. With this book I was really excited because the plot was so intriguing and I think my constant excitement led to my disappointment.

  4. I can see how the slow start can be an issue but it sounds too exciting to pass up. I'd never heard of this so thanks for sharing it!
