Harry Potter Book 1: Discussion [SPOILERS]

Title: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Author: J.K. Rowling
Pages: 310 pages
Published: November 1st, 2003
Genre: Fantasy, Action

Harry Potter has never played a sport while flying on a broomstick. He's never worn a Cloak Invisibility, befriended a giant, or helped hatch a dragon. All Harry knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley. Harry's room is a tiny cupboard under the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in ten years.

But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to a wonderful place he never dreamed existed. There he finds not only friends, aerial sports, and magic around every corner, but a great destiny that's been waiting for him... if Harry can survive the encounter.

Some of you are uber-excited to hear my thoughts on reading Harry Potter for the first time because well it might be one your favorite series, and I know I always get excited when someone talks about my favorite books! Harry Potter did not let me down! 14 years of constant yearning and hype, I finally picked the first book the series alongside some of my friends at school.

In an unfortunate turn of events I did watch the movie before I read this book so I was kind of nodding at everything that occurred in the book. I was so super excited and jumpy when I was reading this book because I recall towards how much I loved the movie. And I got a major kick out of reinventing the Harry Potter series to myself.

Needless to say I don't like the Durleys very much... ahem ahem. I mean, if I was stuck with my aunt and uncle, I would pray that they would be nothing like Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. Harry was such an amazing character, and awfully young at this point in the story. Like I could tell that it was such a young and naive character that has just been exposed to his true self. He was also strong and very true to himself. He rooted for what he believed in and wasn't backed down by anyone not even Snape himself.

I was so reminiscent of the movie because I did watch the movies before I read the books. I swear the book was 100% better. I am hoping for a lot more character development over the next few books because I didn't get very much in this one, but it was a great read. This series is really living up to my expectations.

A Discussion wouldn't be a discussion without some tinking questions (yes tinking, not thinking).
1. Who's your favorite character so far in the book?
Harry, obviously. Not just because he's the main character in the book but I have my reasons for liking him. He's just so lovable as a character and

2. What did you think of Severus Snape in the beginning? In the end?
In the beginning I really didn't understand why Snape was so mean to Harry. First I just thought he was a douche. But in the end, I really understood his characters sympathized with him. He's awesome and I lurvvv him for trying to save Harry countless times!

3. Would you play Quidditch??
HELL YESS!! I would sign up to be in the team and just be the swooping up and down, high and low to get that golden snitch. Would I be good at it? Yeah that's a whole different situation. I would probably suck so bad!

Who else read Harry Potter for the first time? If you've read the book already don't be afraid to discuss it!

    1. Really?? Wow never really imagined getting along with them but glad i have the people that've been in love with HP for so long. This post was also a bit late on my part. Sorry it was so late LOL!

  2. Yay!! You read it!! Ugh! I really wanted to join your HP read a thon but my TBR is just way too big! I'm still really craving some HP rereading though. I'm so glad you liked the book! I can't wait to hear what you think about Snape's character progression as you get further along in the books. The books are so much more detailed about him than the movies. Haha I think I'd be in the same boat with you in Quidditch. I'd LOVE to be on the team and fly around chasing the snitch but I highly doubt I'd be very good at it at all. I'm pretty sucky at the whole sports thing like that =P

    1. LOL Yeah don't worry about the rereadathon. This post was later than I said I was going to post it because I ran into some problems outside of blogging. It'll probably delay the entire system that I've set up! Oh well I'll just have to fix it in the original post. I can't wait to see more of Snape either :D

  3. It's so cool that you're reading these! Harry Potter was never my favourite series in my childhood but I always loved it and I hope you do too. The first book probably isn't the best but even still it is pretty good fun. And don't worry, you'll get your character development later on!

However, I definitely wouldn't play Quidditch. I just know that I would be awful and would probably fall to my death or something. I'd be perfectly happy spectating!

    1. LOL yes we need to address that. Quidditch is going to be the new sports team that everyone will one to be apart of in school xD! Sorry this post was too late as well. In my event post this was supposed to be up a long time ago but I ran into some issues. My entire schedule is now delayed.

  4. You know what? I'm a huge Potterhead but I haven't read books 1-3. I started the series at book 4 because I couldn't resist it any longer and decided to read after watching the 3rd movie. I tried reading book 1 but failed. I'm gonna keep trying though. I MUST. READ. ALL. THE BOOKS.

Great post! I hope I can do something like this when I attempt to read book 1 again. :P

    1. Yes it's very different when you've watched the movie before the books I have to say. It really is difficult, especially me not being so familiar with Harry Potter and starting the series from the very beginning!

HAAH thanks so much for following. I've been following your blog for so long and I love the design, it's so fabbbb

  5. This great review is making me want to re-read all over again! I'd give anything to go to Hogwarts *sigh* and play Quidditch (which I'd love but suck at ahah)

    1. It's ok Anna, we'll suck at Quidditch together. Just to clarify, I have a huge fear of heights so I don't know how that'll work out! But it's always good to try :D

  6. My favorite character in The Sorcerer's Stone is Hermione! Lol! She kind of reminds me of myself in school: super bookish and always following the rules!
    I didn't like Severus Snape in the beginning or end. I had always wondered what his deal with Harry was. I actually didn't start liking him until further into the series. (;
I don't think I'd sign up for Quidditch because I'm terrified of heights and I've never been very athletic at all. Lol!

    Great discussion post, Alex! (:

  7. I have read these books so many times, I can't even count it using both my hands and feet. ;) Now it's been some years since last time, though not more than three, so I just started re-reading it! I love this world more than any other!
I think my favorite character in this book is Hermione. She is kind of sassy and I like that. I mean, I would expect a person with her smarts to be more shy and timid, but not Hermione.
Obviously when I first read this book I thought Snape was the ultimate bad guy, even at the end of the book I was skeptical.
And no, I don't have the guts to play Quidditch :P

I'm looking forward to seeing your review of the other books!! :D

    1. It seems everyone likes Hermione! I didn't quite like her in the first book but I really hope that's destined to change. I'm still thinking about Snape's intentions lol!

      Thanks for commenting and reading!

  8. It's funny, as a teen whose parents have loved Harry Potter since I was in diapers, it's practically incomprehensible to me to imagine discovering Harry Potter for the first time. Harry Potter is, like, a way of life for me. It would be so thrilling to discover it for the first time! I hope you love the rest of the books as much as you did the first one (or even more!).

  9. The first time I read Harry Potter was less than six months ago, and I have only read the first two books. I hadn't seen the movies before it either, so everything was rather new to me! I am sorry to say that I didn't like it as much as I hoped to after all the hype surrounding it. But I have been told to keep reading and around the fourth book I should like it. I hope so!
